Programs

The Summer Engineering Institute (SEI) is three/five-week academic program for middle and high school students in the tri-cities, Hopewell, Petersburg & Richmond and surrounding counties. The program currently takes place at VCU, VSU, and JSRCC. The program is divided into five phases. Each phase addresses the needs of a specific grade and academic level. All phases attend daily sessions Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Phases I through III are three week sessions held at VCU and VSU consecutively. Phase IVA and IVB is a five-week program held at VSU and sometimes JSRCC, consecutively, in which students can earn college credits.

The phases are designed to encourage students to pursue and successfully complete education in science, mathematics, engineering and technological fields.

Daily attendance is mandatory! Students who apply for the program should meet the following criteria:

  • Be a member of a minority group (African American, American Indian, Hispanic) that is under-represented in engineering and technology
  • Be interested in learning about engineering as a career
  • Be academically talented, especially in mathematics and science
